I try to recycle as many items as possible. I don't have glass or clothes collection in my area but I make the effort to take it on a shopping trip and use the recycle bins at supermarkets.
I feel good when I take items to charity shops because I am recycling and also helping then with their fundraising. I also recycle paper , glass, household waste and tins
In SA we have private people that make a living out of collecting materials for recycling, so I and a lot of others make it easier for them by placing these items in plastic bags and place them next to the bin on collection day.
I am a keen recycler but had to fight my council for the right to have a recycling bin as I have communal bins. Apparently this means you don't have to recycle and if you want to you're not allowed to.
We need to start now to get our kids to 'go green', teach them the benefits of it, etc. so that by the time they bit older, it is second nature to recycle!
Since I moved house I find myself in a neighbourhood where the municipality drops off clear plastic bags for recyclable articles. I started filling it which I never did before. There is less dirt to dump and more items that can be recycled. I find I am the only one in my family who is filling the bag. Sometimes I even empty their room bins and remove recyclable items before discarding the rest.
So yes i do do it voluntary and yes its a kind of awareness raised by the municipality which i feel is a good thing after all. Look whats its done to me.
